Scan and remove Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) in ESET Windows home products

Issue

  • Enable Strict cleaning to have your ESET product automatically remove PUAs

Solution

  1. Open the main program window of your ESET Windows product.

  2. Make sure that your ESET product is configured to detect potentially unwanted, potentially unsafe and suspicious applications. The scan will not clean applications for which detection is not enabled.

  3. Press the F5 key on your keyboard to access Advanced setup.

  4. Click Detection Engine Malware scans.

  5. Expand Threatsense parameters, scroll down to view the Cleaning level setting and select Strict cleaning from the drop-down menu. Click OK to exit Advanced setup.

  1. Click Computer scan → Advanced scans → Custom scan.

  1. Select the check box next to Computer or This PC, click the gear icon and then select Smart scan from the Scan profile drop-down menu.
     
  2. Click Scan. Your ESET product will automatically clean or delete all known threats found during the scan.

Version 9.x and earlier

  1. Open the main program window of your ESET Windows product.

  2. Make sure that your ESET product is configured to detect potentially unwanted, potentially unsafe and suspicious applications. The scan will not clean applications for which detection is not enabled. How do I configure settings for PUA detection?
     
  3. Click Computer scanCustom scan.

  4. Select Smart scan from the Scan profile drop-down menu, select the check box next to Computer and then click Setup.

  5. In the Cleaning section, select Strict cleaning from the Cleaning level drop-down menu and click OK.

  6. Click Computer scan Custom scan.

  7. Select Smart scan from the Scan profile drop-down menu and click Scan (or Scan as Administrator). Your ESET product will automatically clean or delete all known threats found during the scan.
